Environmental allergens are substances in the environment that can trigger allergic reactions in some individuals. Common environmental allergens include pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds; dust mites; mold spores; and pet dander (skin flakes, saliva, and urine from pets). In individuals with allergies, the immune system produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) in response to allergen exposure, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, and skin rashes.

An environmental allergen profile is a blood test that measures the levels of IgE antibodies in the bloodstream in response to specific environmental allergens. eNational’s environmental allergen profile measures IgE antibodies in response to twelve common allergens: Alternaria alternata (a fungus commonly found in the environment), American elm, Bermuda grass, cat dander, dog dander, two species of dust mite, English plantain, Kentucky bluegrass, mouse urine, ragweed, and white oak.
