Colon Cancer Screening

Colon Cancer Screening

When colorectal cancer is found at an early stage the 5-year relative survival rate is about 90%. This essential test is used to detect early-stage colon cancer in the early stages through the analysis of stool for microscopic blood fragments.

For individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease, regular lab testing helps track disease progression and can improve treatment efficacy. Ongoing monitoring allows individuals to adjust treatment plans, implement lifestyle changes, and make necessary medication modifications to achieve better disease management.

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the colon or rectum, which are both parts of the large intestine. It is one of the most common forms of cancer in both men and women. While more common in older adults, it is on the rise in younger adults.

Colon cancer typically begins as small, benign growths called polyps on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Over time, some of these polyps can develop into malignant tumors. Early detection and regular screening can help in the early identification and prevention of colorectal cancer, improving the chances of successful treatment.

eNational’s colon cancer screening test is used to detect early-stage colon cancer through the analysis of stool for microscopic blood fragments. It offers a quick, noninvasive way to monitor your colon health from the comfort of your own home.

Who should take this test?

For individuals at average risk for colon cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends regular screening starting at age 45. Earlier screening may be appropriate for those with risk factors such as a family history of colon cancer, certain genetic conditions, a diet high in red or processed meats, and inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis).

What is included in this test?

This blood test measures:

  • Human hemoglobin

This fecal immunochemical test (FIT) uses antibodies to detect human blood in the stool. It is more specific than traditional guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests (FOBT), which can produce false positives due to dietary factors and medications.

How will taking this test benefit me?

Because colon cancer may not cause symptoms in its early stages, screening is critical to early detection—and early detection greatly improves the odds of successful treatment.

The presence of microscopic blood fragments in the stool does not necessarily mean that an individual has colon cancer. If your test yields a positive result, further medical evaluation will be necessary to determine the cause of the bleeding.
