Hepatitis A (STD)

Hepatitis A (STD)

This virus is transmitted through fecal contamination. For sexual exposure, it is recommended in MSM and those without prior vaccination history. You can test as soon as 5-10 days after exposure. This is an IgM test.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the liver. It is caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is typically transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water or through close personal contact with an infected individual.

While hepatitis A is not primarily an STD, it can be transmitted through sexual contact in specific situations. The risk is higher in activities that involve oral-anal contact or when there is contact with the feces of an infected person.

Who should take this test?

This test is used to diagnose current or recent hepatitis A infection. A negative result does not rule out a past infection or the possibility of future infections.

It is recommended for anyone concerned about exposure to the hepatitis A virus and those exhibiting symptoms of hepatitis A, such as jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, and nausea.

What is included in this test?

This blood test screens for:

  • HAV IgM antibodies

How will taking this test benefit me?

Hepatitis A is rarely life-threatening, but it can make you ill for several weeks or months. While there is no antiviral treatment for hepatitis A, knowing your status is crucial to obtaining appropriate supportive care and preventing transmission to others.
